In this book Evert Kleijer goes in search of the elements of architecture and unravels the composition of buildings through observation and analysis of well-chosen examples. He calls these elements ‘instruments of architecture’. The examples analysed range from the anonymous to the famous, from Saenredam to Koolhaas. The texts and images (which include many sketches by the author) are inseparable and complementary.
