In this collection of lectures, presented at various occasions over many years, Monestiroli goes in search of a rational theory of design. He compares definitions of architecture, addresses the issue of style in architecture and art with reference to old and modern masters and explores methodological problems.

Antonio Monestiroli is dean of the School of Architecture at Politecnico di Milano, where he teaches composition. In 2005 he was Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology.
