Bernardo Secchi, Paola Vigano (Ed.)  Antwerp. Territory of a New Modernity --- The Structure Plan for Antwerp was drawn up between May 2003 and June 2006. During that period Milan based architects Bernardo Secchi and Paola Viganò experienced Antwerps ambitions and its need for a vision. This book measures their ideas and imagination with the myth that is Antwerp, but also with that remarkable contemporary reality of Antwerp – the territory of a New Modernity. Strategies The book shows several possible strategies for urbanistic changes within the city. The authors show that Antwerp is to be seen in different ways: Antwerp as a water-city, Antwerp as a harbour-city, Antwerp as a railcity, Antwerp as a ecocity... But, by emphasising the spatial character of the Structure Plan of Antwerp, it clearly breaks with previous planning approaches and it gives new insights. This books narrative–shuttling between structuring visions, various scenarios, a project atlas and numerous micro-stories–illustrates new methods for urbanism, with a very fine balance between reflection and action in urbanism. Series Explorations in/of Urbanism This book is part of the series Explorations in/of Urbanism. This series aims to fill a gap in the contemporary debate concerning urbanism. Each contribution to the series is a case study and an exploration in urbanism (the science of the city) as well as an exploration of urbanism (the discipline that acts upon the city). As a series, Explorations in/of Urbanism has the ambition to document and critically analyse a worldwide spectrum of changing urban conditions in interaction with the development of urbanism. Other books in this series are: - Framing Urban Renewal in Flanders / Stadsvernieuwingsprojecten in Vlaanderen - Reclaiming (the Urbanism of) Mumbai - Designing for a Region |
